Whether you’re a fan of JRPGs like Final Fantasy or not, you cannot deny the influence and impact Final Fantasy VII had on the gaming landscape when that first came out back in 1997.
Nearly two decades later, Square Enix is rekindling the story that transpires around fan favorite Cloud Strife. But the new gameplay footage shown at the Playstation Keynote is already dividing fans.
Purists will find that Final Fantasy VII is not an HD remaster of the older game, it is a remake. From the brief segments of gameplay spliced into the trailer above, it becomes apparent that the combat system has gone through a major overhaul and dialogue has been re-written – this is a different game. It’s easy to see the similarities with the combat system found in Final Fantasy XV, and this has sparked a fire in those that were hoping a return of what captured their hearts many years ago.
I, on the other hand, welcome this change. Final Fantasy VII was a product of its time. If Square Enix had sanctioned a proper remaster to Final Fantasy VII, it would have lead to more of a ‘Museum Piece’ and less of a proper game, in the context of today’s gaming landscape.
